The real highlight of Roger Federer’s weekend was meeting Giorgio Armani after the Davis Cup 2010 play off yesterday between Italy and Switzerland at the Beppe Croce Stadium in Genova. So what if the Federer totally beat the Italian’s team? Mr. Armani was just happy to be in the presence of a fellow great.

We recently looked with the work of Brooklyn based designer Hugh Hayden who seems to have special affinity for tennis balls. He makes tables, window displays, and chair out of them while we‘re busy abusing our precious balls.

Nothing went Radek Stepanek’s way last night. First he was totally overwhelmed by Novak Djokovic during their round of 16 encounter. And then he lost his contact lense during the early stages of the battle. Well, at least he has Nicole Vaidisova in his hotel room.

Anna Wintour watched a very impressive Melanie Oudin run from the US Open President’s Box yesterday. She had Oscar de la Renta by her side and the editrix moved up to the Roger Federer’s friends and family section at the commencement of his match. Minutes later, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban made their way to the top seating area at Arthur Ashe to the delight of the Open crowd. “We love watching Roger,” the actress happily told her seatmates. “And it couldn’t be a more perfect day for tennis.”

Last night, Royal Box seats at the evening session were very close to the Roger Federer’s family cheering section. Anna Wintour was there, of course, and something magical has happened. The editrix took a bathroom break in the beginning of the third set for three games–and the Swiss legend inexplicably fell 0-3 behind to his German opponent. As soon as Wintour returned to her perch (ushers still checked her tickets), the world’s number 1 eaily rolled on and won four out of five next games, and the match in straight sets. Kim Catrall received a nice and loud cheer during the third set of the Federer match but her experience with the US Open fans hasn’t always been this positive. Six years ago, the actress infamously walked out of her seat during a set point of Lleyton Hewitt match at Ashe. She was booed, embarrassed, but nonetheless the star came back to Queens. This time she took a seat at a luxury box and kept her bad habits to the Blackberry messaging only.

Lynette Federer was front row and center at her son’s match today (in Chanel jacket no less) but being in New York to see Roger win another Slam is not her only motivation to traveling to this Slam. “We don’t go to absolutely everything,” she told Royal Box. “But right now I’m here because I haven’t seen my grandchildren for two and a half weeks. They’re just doing so well, so I’m a proud grandmother.”
