Anna Wintour watched a very impressive Melanie Oudin run from the US Open President’s Box yesterday. She had Oscar de la Renta by her side and the editrix moved up to the Roger Federer’s friends and family section at the commencement of his match. Minutes later, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban made their way to the top seating area at Arthur Ashe to the delight of the Open crowd. “We love watching Roger,” the actress happily told her seatmates. “And it couldn’t be a more perfect day for tennis.”

When Maria Sharapova arrived to New York for US Open last year it was bittersweet. She was there for all the pre-tournament activities but she pulled out of Queens due to strained shoulder. This time around, the three-time Grand Slam winner arrived to town as a legitimate contender having just beaten three seeds in Canada and reaching the final at that tournament. Last night, Tiffany & Co and InStyle magazine hosted a cocktail party on top of Cooper Square Hotel in Sharapova’s honor and the star caught up with the Royal Box.
You’re now on top of New York after that very long American road trip…
I know! It feels fantastic to be here. But I’ve had four great weeks coming into Open so I’m excited to be here. It’s quiet now, I have few events, some practice matches and then it all starts. And hopefully I’ll be ready for full two weeks.
You were seeded this morning!
Yes, I wasn’t actually aware that even had a chance to be seeded until the semis in Toronto. It’s not something that I was concerned with over because honestly I wasn’t seeded in my last two tournaments. And if you’re not ready to be a top player in the first round you’re not going to on top of your game in the later rounds. So, you better be ready on day 1! But it’s nice to come here on a strong streak.
Was it difficult for you to adjust to the tour schedule after so many months off?
I feel like I got back to my schedule pretty fast. It sucks you in fast. My goal was to play lots of matches and testing my shoulder and I certainly did that.
Did you do anything special with all the free time off?
I wish! It was really just lots of rehab and recovery all really leading up to this moment. But of course I actually had a lot of free time to sit down with sponsors and actually pursue some amazing opportunities. But I couldn’t be more excited to be back in the city.
What are you wearing today?
A Chloe dress and actually the shoes that I designed myself for Cole Haan.
Tell me about being here with Tiffany’s…
I of course adore Tiffany’s but I think I was more humbled to work with Frank Gehry. I was shocked that he wanted to work with me and actually invited me to the studio to collaborate. We discussed what was important to me in terms of design and that’s lightness and length. His inspiration was the flow of the river to compliment my movement on court.
How was his studio?
It was mind-blowing. He showed me his sketches for buildings in little cities in Russia to towns in America. Just the way he works is mind-blowing.
You’ve been to Guggenheim, right?
Of course! It’s truly awesome.
What does tomorrow look like?
I’m up early in the morning and off to Queens for practice. Even though it seemed like I played like twenty weeks in the row, this is a whole new challenge and tournament.

Pay attention to the cover lines of the new Vogue September issue. It looks like someone has made it up to Roger.

Being a spokesperson for a Lacoste fragrance takes some serious commitment! They actually put you to work…on tennis court. Hayden Christensen found that out the hard way by actually playing a mini-challenge in full French gear at the Lacoste playing field in Geneva, Switzerland. We hear that his volley is very solid.

So, what do Wimbledon runner-up and champion do after a fortnight they’ll never forget? Andy Roddick and Serena Williams decided to have a group dinner together at the Waverly Inn. The pair came with dates (Roddick had wife Brooklyn Decker in tow) and were seated at the best banquette of the West Village celebrity dining staple. And earlier in the day, Roddick and Decker distracted themselves at the Apple store in SoHo (photo above), where they treated themselves to a full bag of purchases.

Maria Sharapova won her semifinal match an hour ago and stuck to the same futuristic Nike gear she introduced back on Monday. We’re talking cropped leggings, long sleeves, Tiffany earrings, successful Parisian dress, and her signature visor. But you can’t blame the Russian for all the layers. The high temperature in Birmingham today was 62 degrees. That’s cold for even the English summer standards.

You’ve voted for the ladies earlier this week and now it’s time to focus on the guys. And overall women have been more impressive on the style front this season. Roger Federer started focusing more on his second serve percentages than monograms this year, while Rafael Nadal shocked us all by abandoning his sleeveless warrior get-up altogether in Australia. Juan Martin del Potro on the other hand embraced the look, while many men of Adidas have struggled to coordinate their outfits so not to confuse casual fans. But we still have our eight favorites and we’re hoping that Paris, London, and New York might still bring out the best in these men. But of course the ATP top 5 has never looked more solid in terms of rankings. So, sometimes you can’t have it all!

Jie Zheng looked impressive in her pink dress with bow while losing to Dinara Safina earlier today in Rome. And this design innovation comes courtesy of Anta, a Chinese answer to Adidas. Jelena Jankovic of course signed with a retailer too in 2008 for a cool $5.1 million. We don’t know even know where to buy this stuff outside of Beijing but their young design team are sure earning their paychecks.

Yes, it’s only the beginning of May and we have three more Grand Slam trophies to give out but the season is reaching the halfway mark thanks to the newly condensed tour schedule. And we’re giving our midseason Royal Box awards to the most stylish women and men around, starting with the ladies of course. Here are the finalists. Who’s your pick?
